Solar panel cleaning

Panels are self-cleaning right up until they are not. Bird mess and the grime along the bottom edge are what cost you the output.

Rain rinses the middle of a panel and leaves everything else. Grime collects along the bottom edge where the water runs off, bird mess bakes on, and moss creeps in from the roof above. A shaded strip across the bottom of a panel costs more output than its size suggests, because of the way the cells are wired.

We clean with purified water and a soft brush on a pole, from the ground. No detergent, because anything left on the glass attracts dirt straight back, and nothing walks on the array.

What's included

  • Every panel washed with purified water
  • Frames and the bottom edge of each panel done properly
  • Bird mess and lichen taken off the glass
  • Moss cleared from the roof immediately above, where it is feeding the problem
  • No detergents and no abrasives on the glass
  • Before and after photographs of the array

How we do it

  1. 01

    Check the array

A look at the panels, the frames and what is on the roof above them before any water goes near it.

  2. 02

    Wash with pure water

Soft brush on a pole from the ground. Pure water dries without spotting, so there is nothing left on the glass.

  3. 03

Deal with what is feeding it

If moss above the array is washing down onto the panels, clearing that is what stops it coming straight back.

  4. 04

    Photograph it

Before and after shots of the whole array, sent over when we finish.

Questions

Solar panel cleaning — common questions

Does it actually make a difference to what they generate?
On a properly dirty array, yes — and most of it comes from that strip of grime along the bottom edge rather than the panel as a whole. On a panel that already looks clean, be sceptical of anyone promising you a big jump.
Will you walk on the roof?
No. It is done from the ground with a pole. Walking on an array is how panels get micro-cracked, and the damage does not show up until the output drops.
How often?
Every year or two for most houses. More often if you are under trees, near a main road, or if there is a lot of birdlife on the roof.
